Psalm 77 opens with the writer expressing his fear of abandonment. He dares to ask the questions that most of us have thought, but have been afraid to speak.
“Will the Lord reject forever?
Will he never show his favor again?
Has his unfailing love vanished forever?
Has his promise failed for all time?
Has God forgotten to be merciful?
Has he in anger withheld his compassion?” (Vv .7-9 NIV)
Whatever the circumstances behind his distress, he makes the critical choice to remind himself of God’s faithfulness in those very areas where he is doubting. He meditates on God’s delivering Israel through the Red Sea.
And then he pens these powerful words:
Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen. (v19).
There’s something mysteriously inviting about One who leads without leaving footprints in His wake. What enemy can stand against that One? The One who has promised:
I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. (Isaiah 43:19)
He opens our path, He is our way, even when He doesn’t leave His footprints.
