As I’m writing at 5:30 AM, moonlight is streaming through my office window. The cheerful flicker of the Christmas tree lights is visible through the living room doorway. (None of this really has anything to do with today’s subject. I just felt like describing my surroundings!)
I didn’t sleep well last night. That’s given me time to think about these lyrics, from Chris Tomlin’s Good Good Father.
… I’ve heard the tender whisper
Of love in the dead of night
And You tell me that You’re pleased
And that I’m never alone
Have you heard God’s “tender whisper of love in the dead of night?” I sure have.
His whisper comes through his Word
Countless times, especially during my teen years, he’s whispered to my heart “Be confident… he who started the good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6) Tender words for the confused, hurting teenager I was. Comforting words to the middle-aged man who still struggles with confidence.
God also speaks to me quietly through the words of Ephesians 2: 8-10. His whisper reminding me that his love provides life. Both today and forever. And that my life is the result of his careful plan.
(If I didn’t know his Word, I would miss many of his whispers! Hmmm…)
His whisper comes through song
There was a season of my life when I woke every morning with these words playing in my mind; “Jesus loves me, this I know“. This simple children’s chorus was God’s tender whisper assuring me he was still present during a time when I felt pretty distant from him. (This continued for over a year!)
Other genres of music also reveal God’s whisper. For me, the piano music of Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata is God’s voice of aching beauty reflecting the ebb and flow of his creation; day leading night, moon following sun, high tide surrendering to low.
His whisper comes through others
How often a friend’s words convey God’s whisper! A note given to me read “I believe in you.” That phrase went straight to my core, reminding me also of God’s thoughts about me.
How are you hearing His whisper?
Does today’s sunrise whisper of God’s daily faithfulness? Is a stranger’s smile God’s whispering comfort to your secret heartache? The laughter of a child God’s whisper that he is enjoying you?
Perhaps, just as he did with me in the early hours of this morning, God has whispered his love to you through a song.
He’s good that way. That’s what a good father does.
You’re a Good, Good Father
It’s who You are…
And I’m loved by You
It’s who I am
This Christmas day, and every day, may our hearts be captured by His quiet voice.
Be still, and know that I am God…. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Psalms 46: 10-11
(Tomorrow I finish up this Christmas week with … the Gift of Interruption!)
