Electronically organizing my life on my phone does NOT appeal to me! I prefer an actual paper and ink calendar that I can hold in my hands, lose under a pile of papers in my office, and spill coffee on in my car.
During the first couple weeks of the new year I take a really big risk and dare to live without a new calendar. I would rather face the danger of living life unorganized for a few days than surrender to the indignity of paying full price for the new year’s calendar. So far my year has never completely disintegrated from my living so close to the edge.
I walked into BAM today and found the calendars marked 50% off. (If you buy a calendar at BAM this weekend, please let them know I sent you. Hopefully they will express their undying appreciation for my unsolicited advertising and provide me with a free calendar every year for the rest of my life.)
A leather (OK, leatherette) calendar caught my eye.
These words are stamped on the front cover, “COURAGE for each day.”
And on the back,
“Have I not commanded you? BE STRONG and COURAGEOUS. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
My still-blank calendar offers no clue as to where 2017’s days and hours will lead. Just as happened in 2016, many of my plans will be interrupted and changed. The same will happen to you. We will experience both blessings and challenges that we have not written into our 2017 agendas.
If we focus on the unknown of this new year, we may be overcome by fear. If we try to protect ourselves by controlling the direction of each day before that day happens, we may be discouraged when plans change. But if we fill each day with the promise that “the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go,” we can experience “COURAGE for each day,” whether that day goes according to plan or not.
At least, that’s how I hear it.
